Fortnite Coming To Next-Gen Systems At Launch With Cross-Play, and Cross-Progression

The upcoming arrival of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X has added another launch title into the mix, a familiar one. Epic Games has confirmed that the free-to-play battle royale game Fortnite will be ready for launch for both next-generation consoles. What’s even better is that you won’t have to worry about losing any of your hard-earned progress, as the new versions will support cross-progression, and will also support cross-play with previous systems. This comes with the announcement of Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 and will support the new consoles by mid-2021.

Epic did not provide any details on how the game will benefit from the increased power of the PS5 and XSX. However, the company did recently announce that it will migrate Fortnite on PS5 and XSX to their new Unreal Engine 5 in the middle of 2021. Epic CEO Time Sweeney said, “this move will open up new possibilities for the game.”

In a recent blog post, Epic confirmed that Fortnite would support cross-progression with PS5 and XSX, so your account, progress and items will carry over. The company also reiterated that Fortnite would continue to support cross-play between all support platforms, including the next-gen consoles.

With Unreal Engine 5, which was just announced, promises to deliver graphics that are up to current Hollywood CGI standards. I wonder how Fortnite will make use of the engine’s new technology.
